It's Fall Y'all

For the past two years John and I have marked the start of the Autumn season by driving into Northern Virginia to pick apples. In the South, we have plenty of peaches, but apples are a rarity in the Southern heat. So, last year marked the first time that we had stepped foot in an apple orchard let alone picked them. I fell in love at first pick though and couldn't wait to go again this year.

While we went to the same town in Virginia as we did last year, we tried out a new orchard- Stribling Orchard. The orchard has been around for 6 generations and for 200 years.

While it was considered pretty late in the apple picking season, there were still a good variety left to choose from including York, Granny Smith, Stayman, and Rome.

After we did all of our pickin', we enjoyed a picnic on the tables overlooking the grounds. Hello, caramel apples and hot apple cider!

Then, John decided to go on a spontaneous adventure to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Even though West Virginia lies close to D.C., it was the only state on the Eastern side of the country that we had not been to. So, while we had a rental car at our disposal, we went for it!

Harper's Ferry is a very historical town and is actually part of a national park. It also lies adjacent to a plethora of hiking trails, including the famous Appalachian Trail which we took a small hike on.

After our outdoor adventure extravaganza, we headed back into the city for a change of scenery. John had surprised me earlier with two tickets to see "Beautiful: A Carole King Musical" at the Kennedy Center. Our tickets were spot on in the orchestra level, just a handful of rows away from the stage. The play was amazing and had us up on our feet singing by the end.

It's not every day that you get the chance to travel across 3 states and a District, pick apples off of a 200 year old tree, hike the A.T., and see a Broadway musical. Cheers to a wonderful day and cheers to many more in the District!
